Did you know that the Society of American Mosaic Artists was originated in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Right at a kitchen table. Now look where it’s is. SAMA
The art of mosaic has been represented in works both religious and secular down through the ages. Greek, Roman and Byzantine craftsmen created stunning presentations through the use of glass, stone and even shells. But nowhere in the world has the execution of mosaic taken such a dramatic turn than in the art of the Vatican mosaicists. It is in Rome that the finest collection in the world of tesserae, the tiniest of stones from which their work takes form, is found. more on this
Now this is a yummie place too. Take a look at what she is building. AH all that Italian Smalti.

The Gang dropped in on mosaic artist Dira Horne only to find her happily ensconced in her Canberra studio, hard at it on a piece for the upcoming 12th Annual ‘Cuttagee Artists’ exhibition: 21st-30th March, at the Indaba Exhibition Centre (just south of Bermagui.)
There she was, up to her armpits in her beloved Italian smalti (which she bought during her European tour last year.)
It’s gunna be a great looking piece – and weather proof for all of you who are already visualising it, centre-stage, out on the terrace! Though if you miss out on this one, you could always commission one of your own…
“The R300000 three-year project, for which funding from the National Arts Council and a United States NGO is anticipated, will initially train 20 candidates in Smutsville/Sizamile and provide materials to start up the project,” Young said.
Plettenberg Bay mosaic artist Margie Ford will share her skills with candidates and local community support NGO Masithandane will manage the project.
The project also provides for a prepaid course fee for people who want to learn the skill.
Once trained, the artists, with the help of mentors and project managers, will be allocated articles and places to decorate in the town according to predetermined designs by professional artists such as Ford.

Wild Tiles author Chrissie Grace
Today I was asking my mosaic friends what would be interesting on my blog…one was a reference to Crafty Synergy and this is some of what I found! What a great site.
I met Chrissie in Orlando, FL in September 2007 at a Disney Art Show. I wish I had read her interview before then so I could tell her I had seen it. Chrissie said she was a student of Michele Petno’s who is the owner of Murano Millefiori oh I forgot to tell you that Michele was with me while I was talking to Chrissie. So see it’s a small world. What a smart chick Chrissie is. Enjoy the article and take a look at her site too. Chrissie has really, really cute work!
