Alyson Stanfield’s book I’d Rather Be in the Studio!
The Artist’s No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion is the most comprehensive self-promotion advice out there for artists. And not only is it packed with information, she also shows artists of all kinds how to implement each action step. For example, I love the section where [she shows me how I can do this or that—mention a specific benefit]. I can also attest that the book is well designed, easy to follow, and a pleasure to look at (graphically). I have attended Alyson’s seminars and also have been on her email list for three years. I can’t emphasize how much she has helped me gain confidence in my self-promotion.

Anne Robinson met her match in Martin
Kent Online- The Kent Messenger Group
ANNE Robinson was no match for mosaic artist Martin Cheek who not only won her quiz show The Weakest Link but managed to laugh off her scathing attacks.

However, the 49-year-old admits that the BBC2 presenter’s jibes did rattle him, especially when the sharp-tongued redhead referred to him as a tiler.

The father-of-two is, in fact, a bit of an authority on mosaics and has written several books about the art form and is a former Daily Express art critic.

He said: “I was riled but tried not to show it. She is actually a very sweet person.”

Martin, of Harbour Street, Broadstairs, came away with £1,970 out of a maximum prize fund of £10,000.

He says the prize was so low because his competitors refused to bank the money after answering the questions.

He said: “I seemed to be the only contestant who was willing, or remembered, to bank!

“The man next to me was an 81-year-old retired engineer and although a very nice person he would not have shouted bank even if he had a gun to his head.”

Martin was told off by the show’s producers for drawing caricatures of the other contestants.

He got his own back by refusing to answer their questions in the final interview unless they let him show one of his mosaics.

He said: “I admit that I went on there for the publicity but the fact that I won is a bonus.”

Martin plans to spend his winnings on a new kiln.

Mosaic Crafts by Martin Cheek<a

Venice, Italy………………Since 1888 Orsoni has been producing glass smalti and 24 k gold mosaic at their foundry in the Cannaregio district of Venice. This historical oasis now offers a 3 day mosaic workshop, teaching the same traditional Byzantine techniques that were used for the Basilica di San Marco. The private mosaic class, with a maximum of 6 students, is an authentic experience into the heart of Venetian artistry and culture. Students participating in the workshop have access to over 2,000 hues of Orsoni mosaic glass. They are taught to use the traditional hammer and hardie for cutting and shaping the individual tessera. On the first day students tour the foundry and color library before beginning their mosaics. Read more on this wonderful mosaic workshop

Be bold, be wild, and be better
By Duda(Duda)
Since the Fauvist artist Henri Matisse was a man of anxious temperament and fears, he might have dealt with these disturbances through the use of color. Whether consciously or not, he may have experienced the healing power of color …

Tuscan Mural

Tuscan Mural Close-Up

This is a commissioned mural I did for a client in Spartanburg, SC. I enjoyed using unglazed ceramic tile, but it sure was hard to cut. Each piece is cut and placed by hand.

Henri Matisse, my hero

This article was written Dec. 2007 but I found it interesting. I love Matisse and I am always reading about him.

The sculptures at the Baltimore Museum of Art illuminate how, through an emphasis on process, distortion and distillation, Matisse created a new immediacy in sculpture. December 21, 2007
